Chapter Three

When they finally arrived at the right room, Win felt a weight slide off his shoulders. They made it.

The entrance was a wide arc, so they could look inside without stepping in. The room was wide and tall, with platforms cutting it into three floors to one side. Offices or storage rooms, Win thought, and hoped it was the latter—the room had enough Champions around already, most clustered around workstations. They were organized on the other half of the room, surrounding huge tanks.

Win looked at them and smiled. The tanks disrupted sightlines and created hiding spots, which was perfect for his team.

There were pipes everywhere, connecting the tanks to each other and leading to rooms beside this one, as well as outside—Win recognized some of the pipes he and the others had followed to find this room. That meant this room was tasked with distributing the water supply. Win straightened up, hands balling to fists. This was exactly the place his team had been looking for.

Some of the Champions were clearly soldiers patrolling, but most people inside seemed to be technicians keeping an eye on the tanks.

“It doesn’t look like a high-strung place,” Win commented, thoughtful. “People are just working and chatting.”

“Is that helpful to us?” Raj asked, doubtful.

“Yes,” Win decided. “It makes causing a distraction easier. Let’s move in.”

They split.

Aya and Chan crept into the room, hiding behind the tanks to reach an out-of-sight station in the corner. Their job was to hack into security systems so no alarms would be raised with their tampering, and decon protocols and tests would be at least delayed if someone tried to start them.

Vasiliy and Raj were tasked with actually contaminating the water—they snuck into the room and made their way to the first and biggest tank around. They had to wait for Aya and Chan to be done to start.

Win and Mackintosh were, of course, the distraction.

Unlike the others, they didn’t creep in—they walked into the room with long strides and loud voices, catching the attention of all who stood around them.

Win walked up to the nearest Champions, which just happened to be a pair of soldiers who would have otherwise caught sight of Aya and Chan.

“Are Amara and Goyle off the clock yet?” he asked them casually, affecting the air of someone who’d just finished their shift. “They were supposed to meet us ten minutes ago outside!”

The Champions narrowed their eyes—but even with their guards up, it was clear they didn’t suspect that Win and Mackintosh were up to anything worse than sneaking into somewhere they shouldn’t be to meet up with a friend.

“Who are you?” the first Champion demanded.

“You don’t work in this sector, or I’d have recognized you,” his partner added. “How did you get in here?”

Win grinned, Mackintosh following a beat later.

“Of course you don’t recognize us, we’re new Champions,” Win said proudly. “We’ve just left the Metamorphosis Center!”

“We were permitted to come here and find Amara and Goyle, old friends of ours, so we could report for duty as new teams,” Mackintosh added.
